Tool Calling

Also known as: Function Calling

Tool calling (function calling) lets a model emit structured requests to external functions — calendars, databases, calculators, retrieval — which the runtime executes and returns as observations.

Reliable tool use needs clear schemas, validation, and refusal paths when arguments are invalid. It is the bridge between chat LLMs and real systems.
